Cranked Coffee, Leederville

Another Sunday, another lunch, another mediocre review, I am either not going to the right places or the blog Gods want bad reviews…or is that the restaurant Gods.
 
So Mr. X and I set off to Subiaco in search of a Fig Tree, after we put my prized purchase in the boot, we decided to head down to Leederville for some lunch.  I love Leederville, reminds me of Melbourne, my favourite shop on the strip is the Record Shop that I faithfully visit everytime I am there, but never cool enough to buy anything, but I still visit. 
 
Anyway, Entertainment book in hand, off we went to Cranked Coffee.  It looked really good, quite crowded, which we assumed had to be a good thing and with 25% off the bill, how could you go wrong.  We went up to the cafe and waited to be seated, when no one came up to us, we just helped ourselves to the nearest table and grabbed a couple of  Menus in the process.  Looked at the menu and we were terribly disappointed, there were two token vegetarian dishes on the menu, Roast Veg Ciabatta Sandwich and Pumpkin and Israeli Couscous salad.  Mr. X decided that he was going to have the Egg and Bacon Ciabatta, without the bacon, and I resigned myself to the salad.  The food came out in no time at all, considering the number of people at the cafe, I thought that was pretty good. 
 
The Egg Sandwich was…an Egg Sandwich, nothing special, Mr. X complained about seasoning but there were no Salt and Pepper shakers on the tables so he just ate it as it was.  My salad was…a salad, there was nothing special about it.  It had badly roasted eggplant (which I know is very, very hard to get right…but come on!!!), pumpkin, sweet potato, and the star of the dish, roasted tomatoes.  They were beautiful, sweet and the flavour of the balsamic gave the dish the lift it needed.  The salad also had the Israeli Couscous (which I am not a fan of by the way, very very bland) and Bocconcini.
 
On the whole the food was average, the service was average and there was no ambiance at all because the music blasting over the speakers.  I could barely hear Mr. X over the screeching pop, which then changed to drum and bass and then to some hip hop.  We were in and out in less than half an hour, which was sad because I was hoping for a long, lazy lunch. 
 
It was not all bad though….my highlight?????  We were seated next to Ernie Dingo!!!!! MMMMmmmm….he looks just as handsome in real life as he does on TV.
 
All in all that’s the next eatery/cafe I will be putting on my never again list, I could have tolerated the crowd, the jarring music and the average service…IF the food was good….but it wasn’t.

Oakover Winery, Middle Swan

Eeeek my first review!!!!!  Unfortunately it’s not a very good one.  On the weekend Mr. X (this was HIS preferred code name…not mine!!!!), headed off to the Swan Valley for some lunch and to replenish my very shabby wine rack.  We decided on Oakover for a couple of reasons, 1) I had an entertainment voucher, and 2) we were starving and it was basically the first winery we hit. 
 
 
The drive in was beautiful, the restaurant was cozy and warm, even though we choose to sit in the patio.  There was 70th Birthday celebration and they had a string quartet, which was nice, but for some reason I thought they were playing the same song over and over.  The service, was really good, we were seated and offered drinks almost straight away, and the drinks came out quickly too.  I had a Cab Merlot and Mr. X had a soft drink.  The wine should have been a preview to the meal, I am no wine connoisseur but it tasted terrible.  I drank it anyway.
 
 
The menu looked ok, we decided on just mains because we didn’t want to fill up before the wine tasting.  I ordered the Arancini and Mr. X ordered the Vegetarian Crepes.  I asked the waitress if the Arancini came with salad and she said No.  I asked her if I could have a small side salad and she said No, I would have to order the separate Garden salad…to which I said NO.  It always astounds me that restaurants in Perth will not do little things like put a few lettuce leaves on a plate to please a customer. 
 
Anyway, the food came out in roughly 10 minutes which we were happy with, but that was about it.  My Arancini was crispy on the outside and just mush on the inside.  It screamed out for seasoning but even the seasoning didn’t help.  It was bland and tasted like boiled rice.  Mr. X’s crepes looked good but again needed a heap of seasoning and the roast veg in the crepe was under cooked, the eggplant was chewy and the Ratatoullie was very very sour.  We swapped dishes because I just could not eat my Arancini.  We were thankful we didn’t order entrees and we were definitely thankful that we had an Entertainment voucher. 
 
I dont think Mr. X and I will be visiting Oakover again, not even if we are starving.  In my opinion the vegetarian dishes on the menu were weak with no imagination or thought put into them.  You dont have to in the Swan Valley, there are heaps of wineries and restaurants that serve delicious food.

Mutter Paneer

Last night I felt like a proud mum or what I would assume a proud mum feels like.  The Darling D had a work lunch and he was going to take in some Indian,  after much thought he decided he wanted Paneer and Dhal.  After heaving a sigh of relief that neither was complicated or involved a lengthy list of spices and ingredients I set to work.  I took a risk and decided on a recipe I had never tried before Mutter Paneer, which is basically peas and a speciality Indian cheese.  This goes with Roti or Dosa or Naans.  Again not alot of prep took me about 30 minute and it was done.  If you’re wondering where you get Paneer, supermarkets now sell them or head down to your local Indian Grocer, they are bound to have some.
 
 

Ingredients:

  •  bag of frozen green peas
  • 3 medium size tomatoes
  • 200 gms paneer
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • Pinch of asafetida (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 inch of cinnamon stick
  • 1 tablespoon chopped ginger
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tub cream
  1. Cube the paneer brown on medium high heat.
  2. Blend the tomatoes and ginger to make a paste.
  3. Heat the oil in a saucepan.
  4. Add the asafetida, cumin seeds, bay leaves and cinnamon and fry for a few seconds.
  5. Add the tomato paste, coriander, turmeric, chili powder and paprika.
  6. Simmer until the mixture reduces to about half.
  7. Add the green peas cook for a couple of minutes
  8. Add paneer and cream, simmer on low for a few minutes

And your done, adjust the spices to suit your taste so it’s not too spicy or too bland. 

Important note: Do not leave on the heat and forget about it like I did!!!!!!!

 

 

Roast Vegie Couscous with Haloumi and Yogurt Dressing

Couscous just has to be one of my favourite carbohydrates, its easy, goes with anything and quick, quick, quick.
This is my newly tested and household approved Roast Vegie Couscous with Haloumi and Yogurt dressing.
If you’re not too worried about prep it takes no time at all, this took me all of 30 minutes, when I say not too worried about prep, I mean the sweet potato went in with their skins on and the carrots were just washed and the garlic was just smushed in they skins and chucked in. 
 
So here it is:
 
Roast Veg:
 
Sweet potato – diced
Cauliflower – Roughly chopped
3 cloves of garlic
Baby Carrots – whole
Thyme, chilli flakes and olive oil
 
*you can use any veg you want, any herbs you want, this is all I had.
 
Dressing:
 
Sour Cream – 1 cup
yogurt – 1 cup
Lemon – half
1 clove minced garlic
Chives – hand full
Salt and Pepper
 
Couscous:
 
Couscous – as much as you want
Haloumi – diced and fried
paprika – to taste
Vege Stock powder – I TBS
Flaked Almonds, Sunflower Seeds and Pepitas
1 can chickpeas
Parsley
 
It’s basically a throw all together recipe, for the exception of the Haloumi and Parsley all the ingredients for the couscous go in one pot covered in boiling water.
When cooked (it on takes a few minutes) fluff with a fork, add haloumi and then parsley.
 
You can either add the roast veg to the couscous or have it on the side, top this with the delicious dressing and eat, eat, eat!!!!!
